This AI-assisted cosplay photography project is my interpretation of that world—a gathering of characters inspired by the Hellfire Club and the wider X-Men universe, brought together as though posing for a formal portrait at the height of the Club’s power.

Rather than approaching the concept as a conventional superhero photograph, I wanted the image to feel like a secret aristocratic society captured in a grand group portrait. Victorian and Regency influences mingle with leather, corsetry, capes, jewellery and fantastical elements, creating the peculiar mixture of decadence and menace that has always made the Hellfire Club visually distinctive.

Sebastian Shaw was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His mutant abilities first manifested shortly after he was accepted to engineering school and his father Jacob Shaw died after he contracted an incurable disease due to genetic manipulation by Mister Sinister. Sebastian devoted himself to his studies and created Shaw Industries, becoming a millionaire by age 30 and a billionaire by age 40.

Shaw becomes engaged to Lourdes Chantel, also a mutant. He is soon initiated into the Hellfire Club thanks to his vast fortune, having caught the attention of Ned Buckman, then White King of Hellfire Club's New York branch. Shaw becomes part of the Council of the Chosen, earning the rank of Black Bishop. Chantel does not trust Buckman, and feared that Shaw's ambition and the nature of the Hellfire Club would corrupt him.

Chantel is seemingly killed by Sentinels in a battle. Upon discovering that Ned Buckman is supporting Steven Lang's Project: Armageddon, Shaw executes a coup, using Emma Frost's telepathy to make Buckman kill all the Council of the Chosen and then himself. Shaw proclaims himself Black King, remakes the Council of the Chosen into his Inner Circle, and gathers Frost, Harry Leland and Donald Pierce as the Lords Cardinal of Hellfire Club.

As the leader of the Hellfire Club, Shaw starts plans to dominate the world through force, money and power. His connections to top officials of corporations and government, acquired via the club and through his position as CEO of Shaw Industries, make him a powerful enemy. Shaw becomes a major supporter and builder of Sentinels. This activity brings him into frequent contact with Robert Kelly and Henry Peter Gyrich, to whom he appears to be an anti-mutant bigot.

Shaw sets his eyes on the X-Men, scheming to capture and study them for use in breeding an army of powerful mutants for the Hellfire Club. He employs the superpowered assassin Warhawk to plant a bug in Cerebro, ensuring the Hellfire Club would be aware of newly manifested mutants at the same moment as the X-Men themselves, as well as giving them access to secret details of their powers and fighting techniques. However, the club's operatives prove ineffective at defeating the X-Men in the field, and the first two mutants they locate in this manner are lost.

Now aware of the Hellfire Club's existence, the X-Men infiltrate their headquarters, but are defeated and captured. However, the X-Men escape before Shaw can put them to use. Shaw's control of the Hellfire Club grows more tenuous as Pierce proves to be a mutant-hating traitor, and a new recruit to the Inner Circle, Selene, sets her sights on replacing Shaw as the chairman. The Hellfire Club is forced to battle alongside the X-Men against Nimrod. Though the group emerges victorious, Hellfire Club members Harry Leland and Friedrich von Roehm die in the fight. After the battle, the Hellfire Club and the X-Men become allies of sorts, with Magneto and Storm filling the position of White King. Shaw is ousted from the Hellfire Club by Magneto, Selene, and Frost, who view his support of the Sentinels as endangering the group.

Madelyne Pryor is a clone of Jean Grey, the ex-love-interest and first wife of Cyclops, and the mother of Cable. She was a long-standing member of the X-Men supporting cast until a series of traumas eventually led to her being manipulated into being an antagonist.

As the Red Queen, Madelyne additionally demonstrated other abilities of a mysterious nature which she referred to as "magic", which were probably related to the eldritch magics she had previously wielded. She was shown to heal wounds, locate spirits interdimensionally, and work in conjunction with science to restore life to the dead.

As White Queen of the Hellfire Club, Frost held many titles, one of which was chair of the board and CEO of Frost International, which helped to fund the activities of the Lords Cardinal. Frost also became the chair of the board of trustees and the headmistress of the Massachusetts Academy, a school for mutants which served as a counterpoint to Professor Charles Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. Frost and the club's agents later attempted to recruit Kitty Pryde for the Massachusetts Academy, and captured (and Frost personally tortured) several members of the X-Men, including Storm, Colossus, Wolverine, and Phoenix. Frost engaged Phoenix in a psychic battle in which she was overpowered and on the verge of being killed. Frost launched a last-minute attack that led the X-Men to believe she had committed suicide, though in truth, she was comatose and recovering from Phoenix's attack under the care of Shaw. In another encounter with the Hellfire Club, Frost telepathically forced Pryde's parents to transfer her from Xavier's school to Massachusetts Academy. Frost then switched minds with Storm to defeat the X-Men from within their own ranks. However, the process was soon reversed, restoring the women to their respective bodies. Later, Frost was rendered comatose temporarily by Mastermind.

Donald Pierce was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He first appears as a high-ranking member of the Inner Circle of the Hellfire Club, where he holds the position of White Bishop. However, Pierce is in fact a genocidal mutant hater, and has only joined the Hellfire Club to kill the Inner Circle's other members, all of whom are mutants. In addition to hating mutants, Pierce is also bigoted towards certain nationalities and harbors a sense of self-loathing due to his cyborg status, referring to himself as "only half a man". He is the CEO and principal shareholder of Pierce-Consolidated Mining, and operates out of a mining and laboratory complex in Cameron, Kentucky. Pierce and his mercenaries kidnap Professor X and Tessa in a plot against the Hellfire Club and the X-Men, but he is defeated by the Professor despite a device shielding him against telepathic attacks. Pierce is handed over to Tessa of the Hellfire Club, expelled from the Inner Circle, and taken to a secret holding facility at Shaw Industries.

Sunspot, or Roberto da Costa, is an Afro-Brazilian, the son of wealthy Afro-Brazilian businessman Emmanuel da Costa and white American archaeologist Nina da Costa. In The New Mutants #7, his father is described as a very driven man, who "grew up [...] a barefoot houseboy", was "by age 20 [...] a millionaire [and] by 30, an economic and political force to be reckoned with." Emmanuel constantly pushes his son to reach for both his physical and intellectual peaks. Thanks to his father's encouragement, Roberto rises to the position of star soccer player at school and is considered by recruiters for the Olympic Games. When Roberto is playing a soccer game with his team, members of the opposing team assault him while hurling racialized insults at Roberto and his father for being black. While taking a brutal beating, his mutant powers manifest, suddenly transforming him into a creature of solid black solar energy. Surprised and terrified, everyone abandons the stadium except for his girlfriend, Juliana.

Roberto is approached by Selene of the Hellfire Club, who offers to have him replace his deceased father Emmanuel's seat in the club's Inner Circle, as the seats are inherited. She promises Roberto that she will resurrect Juliana if he joins and he agrees. Selene does bring back the spirit of Juliana, but put it into the body of a comatose girl. Possibly because he feels obliged to fulfill his promise, Roberto decides to stay, becoming Selene's Black Rook. Roberto attempts to contact the resurrected Juliana, but seeing she has no memory of her previous life, he decides to leave her alone.

Roberto next appears in the title X-Treme X-Men as the head of the Los Angeles branch of X-Corporation, along with former New Mutant Magma and former Hellion Empath. Roberto's ties to the Hellfire Club are not severed, as Sebastian Shaw approaches, having taken over the position of Hellfire Club's Lord Imperial and wanting Roberto as his Black King. Shaw claims that he is trying to turn the Club into a force of good, so Roberto accepts, though he keeps his involvement with Shaw a secret.

Soon after, Shaw is injured in battle by Donald Pierce, leaving him incapable of overseeing the Hellfire Club. Roberto takes over as Lord Imperial. At his side is Sage, who leaves the X-Men to make sure Roberto is not corrupted by power.

Sage's exact country of origin remains unrevealed, but she claims to have come from a war-torn region. By the time she meets Charles Xavier, she is living by herself in Afghanistan, where she tries to keep out of the conflicts between the rebels and the government. One day, she follows a telepathic call to a cave where she finds Xavier with his legs crushed under debris, the result of his battle with the alien Lucifer. Xavier senses that Sage is a mutant, and explains the meaning of her abilities. Sage saves Xavier, also dispatching of a group of robbers, something she regrets years later.

Years later, Sage meets up again with Xavier, who at the time is recruiting the original X-Men. Instead of being chosen for the first X-Men class, she is sent to spy on the Hellfire Club as Tessa, and to keep watch on Sebastian Shaw.

Daimon Hellstrom, also known as the Son of Satan and Hellstorm, is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics.

Daimon Hellstrom was born in the fictional town of Greentown, Massachusetts. He is the son of Satan and a mortal woman named Victoria Wingate (his father was later retconned to be the demon Marduk Kurios). Daimon and his younger sister, Satana, were trained by their father in the art of magic, tapping into the power granted them by their dark heritage. However, while Satana embraced her heritage, Daimon clung to his humanity. When their mother discovered who her husband really was, she was driven insane. Daimon and Satana were separated and put in different homes after their mother was institutionalized and their father banished back to Hell. Daimon grew up in a Jesuit-run orphanage, never hearing a word from his father or sister. He became a professor of anthropology at St. Louis University. He then set himself up as an occult investigator and defender of humanity, battling dark arcane forces — primarily those of his father — under the name of the "Son of Satan", as a demonologist and exorcist.

in Selene's Hellfire Club...Selene, finding herself the sole remaining member of the Inner Circle, reformed the club in her own image and allied with the ruler of Hell, Blackheart. After a confrontation with the Fantastic Four, Blackheart is imprisoned and Selene's captive Daimon Hellstrom is freed; Hellstorm then became the club's White King to ensure a balance of power and light. Selene would later successfully induct Sunspot into the Inner Circle, offering the resurrection of his long-dead girlfriend, Julianna, who died saving his life.

Selene Gallio is a supervillain appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by Chris Claremont and Sal Buscema, the character first appeared in The New Mutants #9 (November 1983). Selene belongs to the subspecies of humans called mutants, who are born with superhuman abilities. She is often associated with the Hellfire Club's Inner Circle and is despised as an enemy of the X-Men.

Selene offered Eliphas immortality in exchange for helping her kill and absorb every soul in Rome. Eliphas went about drawing pentagrams and performing rituals at several locations in the city, but warned a small girl to get her family out. The girl's father alerted the authorities and Eliphas and Selene were captured before the spell could be carried out. Just before they were burned at the stake Selene killed the guards. She then cursed Eliphas for the perceived betrayal with an eternal life of torture, transforming Eliphas into a vampire-like creature.

Selene is trapped for centuries in the Amazon in the Romanesque town of Nova Roma. She is worshipped as a goddess and worked to maintain the isolation of the town so she could maintain control. Eliphas, now known as Eli Bard, locates Selene in Nova Roma. Still in love with her despite her curse, Bard realizes of having to make an offering to her before approaching her. She also was able to marry several times and have descendants, including Amara Aquilla. Selene attempts to kill Amara by knocking her into a lava pool, which activates Amara's latent mutant ability to manipulate fire and earth. Amara goes on to join the New Mutants as Magma.

After escaping from Nova Roma, Selene makes her way to New York City. With help from Friedrich von Roehm, Selene contacts the Hellfire Club and forces the group to take her in as their Black Queen. Selene intends to become the sole leader of the Hellfire Club, which results in Sebastian Shaw and Emma Frost conspiring to kill Selene by manipulating and training the young mutant Firestar to assassinate her. This fails when Firestar realizes their plan.

Selene returns to the Hellfire Club after striking a deal with the demon Blackheart and seemingly throwing out the rest of the Inner Circle. She offers Sunspot the position of Black Rook, which the latter initially refused but then accepted when Selene and Blackheart revealed that doing so would allow them to resurrect Juliana Sandoval, the girl who died saving Sunspot's life when the latter first joined the New Mutants. Sunspot is forced to accept and become Selene's protégé.

Rich emerald, crimson, ivory, midnight blue and gold dominate the palette, while dramatic studio lighting gives the scene the polished grandeur of a painted society portrait transformed into modern cosplay photography.

AI was used as a creative extension of the photographic process—helping expand the costumes, atmosphere and fantastical details while retaining the aesthetic of a carefully staged studio portrait. The intention was not simply to recreate comic-book panels, but to imagine what these extraordinary characters might look like if they stepped out of Marvel’s illustrated world and assembled before a camera.

What has always interested me about the Hellfire Club is the contrast at its heart: beauty and danger, sophistication and corruption, ceremony and conspiracy. Unlike heroes defined by uniforms and emblems, the Hellfire Club projects power through elegance. Their costumes resemble evening wear, aristocratic dress and historical fashion—but beneath that refinement lies ambition, manipulation and mutant power.

The resulting portrait is therefore less a superhero team photograph than a family portrait of a secret empire.
