Cafezinho (Little Coffee)

Laranjinha (Little Orange)

During the 1980s, the original Strawberry Shortcake toy line became a worldwide phenomenon. Licensed by American Greetings, the beloved greeting card character inspired dolls, toys, and merchandise produced by numerous companies across the globe. In most countries, these products closely resembled—or were at least clearly inspired by—the versions sold in the United States.

In Brazil, the São Paulo-based toy manufacturer Estrela secured the license to capitalize on the demand for what the industry dubbed "Pink Gold"—the international Strawberry Shortcake craze. Launched in 1982, Estrela's Moranguinho ("Little Strawberry" in Portuguese) line initially mirrored dolls available in other markets. However, the company soon developed its own creative direction, producing designs that often strayed from the established source material.

Cafezinho (Little Coffee/ Coffee Eclair)

Over the course of the original era, Estrela released more than 60 dolls, many featuring unique appearances and, in some cases, exclusive scents. The line remained in production for nearly twice as long as the original American Strawberry Shortcake series of the 1980s.

The story did not end there. In the early 2000s, following Strawberry Shortcake's relaunch by Bandai, Estrela returned with a new generation of Moranguinho dolls. These releases were more faithful to the contemporary character designs while retaining the smaller, Kenner-style scale of the original 1980s toys. Production continued throughout the Bandai era and extended into Playmates Toys' "World of Friends" line.

Beginning in 2020, twelve of Estrela's exclusive characters were reproduced by the French company Altaya as part of a collector series that also included reproductions of the original U.S. dolls, one Argentinian character, and several new exclusives. Distributed as a monthly subscription in France and Belgium, the collection ultimately comprised 50 issues, each pairing a doll with an exclusive magazine and greeting card. Through the company's international branch, Planeta DeAgostini, the series has also been released in Spain, Brazil, and Argentina. As a result, collectors may encounter these dolls and accompanying publications on the secondary market in French, Spanish, and Portuguese editions.

Bananinha (Little Banana)

Abacaxizinho (Little Pineapple)

Maçãzinha II (Little Apple"/"Apple Star)

This photo series is a loving tribute to the Brazilian Strawberry Shortcake dolls produced by Estrela, one of Brazil’s most beloved toy companies. While Strawberry Shortcake is remembered around the world for her colorful cast of fruit-themed friends, the Brazilian Estrela line introduced its own distinctive charm, local character names, and unique doll designs that have become treasured collectibles among fans today.

Using AI-assisted portraiture and cosplay-inspired character design, this project transforms these vintage dolls into lifelike children while preserving the visual language that made the originals so memorable. Every portrait begins with the defining elements of the dolls—the bright fruit motifs, striped stockings, colorful shoes, oversized bows, playful curls, and cheerful expressions—and reinterprets them through a contemporary photographic lens.

The resulting images imagine what these beloved characters might look like if they stepped out of their packaging and into the real world. Their costumes remain faithful to the dolls, while subtle details such as natural skin textures, freckles, expressive eyes, realistic fabrics, and soft studio lighting bring a sense of authenticity and warmth. The project intentionally retains the innocence, optimism, and whimsical spirit that defined the original toy line.

Presented against clean studio backgrounds and photographed in a style inspired by classic children’s portraiture, each character becomes both a nostalgic memory and a newly realized personality. The series celebrates the creativity of toy design, the enduring appeal of childhood collectibles, and the cultural legacy of Estrela’s interpretation of the Strawberry Shortcake universe.

Sorvetinho de Limão (Lemon/Lime Sorbet)

Melanciazinha (Little Watermelon)

Maçãzinha (Little Apple)

Cerejinha (Little Cherry)

Rosinha (Little Rose)

Sorvetinho de Maracuja (Passion Fruit Sorbet)

More than a recreation, the photo project is an exploration of memory and imagination—bridging the gap between vintage dolls and modern portrait photography. It invites viewers to revisit a beloved chapter of childhood while discovering these iconic Brazilian characters anew through a fresh, human perspective.

“Some toys are played with, some are collected, but a few live forever in the imagination.”
