Astro Boy, known in Japan as Mighty Atom, is Japanesea Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Osamu Tezuka. It was serialized in Kobunsha's Shōnen from 1952 to 1968, with its 112 chapters collected in 23 tankōbon volumes by Akita Shoten. Dark Horse Comics published an English translation in 2002. The story follows the eponymous Astro Boy, an android young boy with human emotions who is created by scientist Umataro Tenma in the likeness of his son Tobio after the latter's death in an accident. Eventually, Astro is sold to a robot circus run by ringleader Hamegg, but is saved from his servitude by Professor Ochanomizu. Astro becomes a surrogate son to Ochanomizu who creates a robotic family for Astro and helps him to live a normal life like an average human boy, while accompanying him on his adventures.

The series has been adapted into three anime series produced respectively by the first incarnation of Mushi Production and its direct successor Tezuka Productions, with a fourth in development. The manga was originally adapted for television in 1963 as Astro Boy, the first popular Japanese animated television series, which pioneered and embodied the aesthetics that have characterized anime in general. After enjoying success abroad, Astro Boy was remade in the 1980s as New Mighty Atom, known as Astroboy in other countries, and again in 2003. In November 2007, the titular character was named Japan's envoy for overseas safety.

This AI-assisted cosplay photography project reimagines two of the most beloved characters from classic Japanese manga and animation—Astro Boy and his spirited younger sister Uran—through a playful and contemporary photographic lens.

Astroboy, is the robot boy fashioned after the deceased son of Dr. Tenma, the head of the Ministry of Science in the year 2000. Aside from possessing the strength of 100,000 horsepower (later 1,000,000, though these numbers often fluctuate between stories) and the kind personality of a child, he has what are called his "seven amazing powers": jet-powered flight, multilingualism, analytical skills, headlight eyes, super-sensitive hearing, hidden weapons in his back, and the ability to tell if a person is good or evil. In addition, he has a built-in Geiger counter and shortwave communication system.

Uran is Astro's robot sister with a shown adoration towards Astro; she is a superhuman robot with a naive, tomboyish personality. Constructed by Dr. Ochanomizu as a "gift" for Astro, Uran is an extremely mischievous little girl who constantly lands her older brother in trouble. While lacking Astro's weaponry and propulsion systems, she is extremely powerful (50,000 horsepower) and regularly accompanies him on various missions (or attempts to). Like Astro, she is fully capable of experiencing human emotions - though being somewhat less 'mature'. In the 2003 anime Uran has the ability to communicate with animals. Her name is based on uranium, a metal used to power nuclear reactors.

Astro Boy is canonically shirtless simply because he is a robot. Creator Osamu Tezuka designed him in 1952 as an android whose body is built to look like a young boy, completely foregoing clothing in favor of a sleek, purely mechanical look.

His design prioritizes functionality and youthful innocence rather than modesty, leading to his iconic look of just wearing signature rocket boots, a belt, and tight trunks. The iconic red boots and briefs represent a design style meant to be instantly readable to children without cluttering the panels with extra details.

However, cultural differences mean Western audiences often find his lack of a shirt jarring. When the character was adapted for the 2009 CGI Astro Boy film by American studios, producers altered his design to wear a white t-shirt and blue jacket to appeal to Western conventions of a "normal boy" needing clothes.

Set against a simple studio backdrop, the series captures the enduring charm of Osamu Tezuka’s iconic creations while celebrating the innocence, optimism, and sense of wonder that have made these characters beloved across generations. Astro Boy is portrayed with his trademark confidence and heroic determination, proudly striking a pose that reflects his strength and unwavering courage. Beside him, Uran radiates warmth and joyful energy, her cheerful expression and festive attire adding a lighthearted seasonal touch to the scene.

The project blends cosplay, digital artistry, and modern photographic techniques to create images that feel both nostalgic and fresh. Rather than aiming for strict realism, the series embraces a whimsical interpretation of the characters, preserving their recognizable silhouettes, expressions, and playful personalities while presenting them in a stylized photographic format.

At its heart, this collection is a tribute to the timeless themes found throughout Tezuka’s work: family, friendship, kindness, and hope for a brighter future. Through AI-assisted creative processes and cosplay-inspired character design, the project invites viewers to reconnect with the magic of childhood imagination and the enduring legacy of one of Japan’s most influential storytelling universes.
